The flagship, in the wood it was built around. An end grain butcher block in black walnut, built to be used daily and handed down eventually. Not a decoration, a tool that happens to be beautiful.
Available in six sizes, from the Mini built for everyday prep to the Heirloom Board sized for a lifetime of gatherings. Pick your size above, then finish it your way with the edge, grip, and add-on options.
Why Black Walnut
Walnut is a deep chocolate brown with lighter tones running through it. In end grain, those tones show up as the small light and dark shapes scattered across the surface, so no two boards come out the same. With regular oiling it mellows and takes on a warmer, richer glow over the years.
It's also a practical wood for a board you'll use every day. Walnut is firm enough to hold up to years of chopping and still gentle on a sharp knife edge, and its dark color hides the light staining that comes with real use, like beet juice or berries, better than lighter woods do.
It costs more than cherry or maple because the lumber does. Walnut is the most expensive of the three to source, and it's the wood most people picture when they think of an heirloom cutting board. If you want the board that anchors the whole kitchen, this is the one.

Edge and Grip Options
Edge profile. The 45 degree chamfer is the classic look, a crisp angled edge that softens the corners without rounding them off. The roundover gives a smooth, rounded edge that feels comfortable in the hand. Straight keeps a clean, square edge for a more modern, minimal profile.
Finger grooves. The Reversible Grip puts a groove in the middle of each end, so both faces of the board stay fully usable. Flip it for a fresh surface, or keep one side for prep and the other for serving. The Underside Grip sits low along the bottom edge, tucked out of sight from above for a cleaner profile and an easy lift off the counter. Adding feet? The Underside Grip is the better match, since feet make the board one-sided anyway.
The Build
Every board is sanded through six grits, 80, 120, 150, 180, 240, and a final pass at 320, and water popped between every one. Wetting the surface raises any loose fibers so the next grit cuts them clean, which means the board stays smooth after its first wash instead of turning fuzzy. From there it gets multiple rounds of mineral oil and a final beeswax board butter. Each one carries the Built By Berger mark on its side.
